In 2003 there were 106,400 marriages in Australia
and 53,100 divorces, currently about 32% of marriages
end in divorce. 6% of divorces occur in the first
year, 33% within the first 5 years and a further
22% in five to nine years of marriage. The institution
of marriage is under great threat today. The aim
of The Marriage Course is to help reverse the decline
by enabling married couples to build a healthy marriage
that will last a lifetime.
The eight-session course was pioneered
in 1996 at Holy Trinity Brompton,
London and arrived in Australia
in 2002. The Marriage Course involves
a candlelit dinner, a talk and an
opportunity for each couple to discuss
a wide variety of issues relating
to married life. The course is intended
for happily married couples as well
as those experiencing difficulties
and is designed for non-churchgoers
as well as churchgoing couples.
Topics covered on the course include
Building Strong Foundations, The Art
of Communication, Resolving Conflict,
The Power of Forgiveness, Parents
and In-Laws, Good Sex, and Love in
Action.
The course has been completed
by many couples accross Australia.
The Marriage Course manual has been
translated into 7 other languages
and is being run in 13 countries
including United Kingdom,
United States, Canada, Belgium, Malta,
Sweden, New Zealand and South Africa.
